INTERVIEW WITH INDEPENDENT AUTHOR – BARBARA CHIOFFI

Barbara ChoffiTell us a bit about yourself.
Growing up in North Carolina, I spent my early years playing in the woods, imagining I was a wolf merrily chasing jackrabbits. J Our family moved to Alabama as I entered the 11th grade, living in the house where my father was born. I attended Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama, majoring in Music Ed with a minor in voice. After college and two years teaching in Montgomery, I moved to Virginia, accepted for a teaching position applied for on a lark. It was a good move. Teaching music for almost 40 years, my writing aspirations remained hidden, but my imagination always soared. I visited every place and time imaginable, fascinated by the characters in history. Mama told my sisters and me about the mad monk, Rasputin, plus varied other historical figures. She was a brilliant woman, an avid reader, and an outstanding writer. In her day, there was no Amazon or indie authors, but she was lucky enough to have one of her stories published in a southern literary journal. She has been my inspiration.

What bought you to the world of writing?
I followed my mother’s example, reading everything I could get my hands on, even if it was beyond my understanding. I know that sounds strange, but I did enjoy reading articles on science and space, often reading many times until I had a basic understanding of the subject. I read much of what my mother wrote. She kept journals and I began doing the same, those being a springboard for future stories.

What is your first book and what do you think of it now?
Angel Mine is my first story. I’m a romantic at heart and believe in happy ever afters, and yes, my head is always in the clouds. Jeza and Jackson are my ideal couple, both from failed relationships; they find their true love in each other with just enough intrigue to make it interesting. I’m thinking of redoing it now because I’ve learned a little since then and see things that need changing.

TrickeryWhat type of books do you write and do they fulfil your reader’s needs?
I write what I happen to think of at the moment. My second story is Lycan Love, written after reading shifter novels by Christine Feehan. I wrote Trickery, a trilogy of horror tales, after watching Stephen King, one of mY favourite writers. There is such a wide variety of books available today, and I think some will find mine enjoyable.

Would you like to feature a book, if so which one? Tell us about it?
Lycan Heart formally Lycan Love, begins the story of the Flannery family. Robert Flannery offers a young girl seeking stability a job as a housekeeper. Julia learns the family secret the night she meets Justin, Robert’s son, in his wolf persona. They form an instant bond, and as the story unfolds, other secrets become known, ones that
will result in danger for them all. (UNAVAILABLE AT PRESENT)

How long does it take you to write your first draft?
I write in spurts, usually two or three chapters flow easily, and then I’m stuck for a while. I’m following something interesting I read recently called the ‘snowflake’ method. It seems to be helping me stay on track.

Do you plot or not, if so why?
I don’t write it out but have the idea in my head. I’m finding, though, that preplanning makes all the difference. It’s still difficult for me with my ADHD, but I’m persevering.

Do you write in 1st or 3rd person, or have you do both?
I think there are advantages and disadvantages to both, but I let the character direct me. My WIP began as 1st person, but it didn’t ring, so it’s now in 3rd.

How do you edit your work? Do you leave your draft alone for a while or edit as you write?
I edit when I’m done with a segment, then can never leave it alone. When finished with the story, I still find things to change…never satisfied.

What type of people/readers do you market your books to?
I don’t think of it that way. I write the story as I see it, mainly with the romantic, HEA idea. If I had to choose a genre, it would be paranormal. Fantasy has always been
my escape.

Do you self-publish or have you worked with an Agent/Publisher
Self-publish.

How do you promote your writing?
I’m not good in this area. Basically an introvert, it’s difficult for me to put myself out there. I will post cover reveals on FB and my book release, but that’s about it.

Who are your favourite authors?
Stephen King, Christine Feehan, Karen Marie Moning, C. S. Lewis, Ralph Waldo Emerson, to name a few. There are too many indie authors, and I wouldn’t want to leave anyone out, but I admire so many and value the friendships I’ve developed during this last year.

Bonfire Heart ecover (002)Excerpt

He looked down her long legs to her toes busy burying into the warm sand. Seb silently took a deep breath and placed his hand next to hers in the small gap that separated them.
“So how did you find this place?” She asked, letting her little finger hook over his. A million tiny fireflies started to flutter under his skin like they were trying to escape.
“My Dad taught me to sail and we found it on one of our adventures.”
“A family tradition then, I like it.”
“You mean it” his voice faltered.
“Yes, I hope you’ll bring me here again on our next date.”
The fireflies were now escaping into the heat on his cheeks as he felt her hand squeeze his “That’s if we’re going to be dating?”
He blinked and in the instance, his eyes were shut he felt her lips touch his cheek. Taking this as a sign he pulled her tight into him and found her lips with his. A closed mouth to start as he revelled in the velvet feel and the salty taste. A tiny, tentative start to their fledgeling relationship as he grew bolder and let his lips push hers open so that their tongues could meet. He heard a tiny sigh escape and rush across his skin as she responded, letting her hand run down his spine. She was everything he’d imagined and more. Like eating your favourite sweets all at once. When they parted each was breathless and in awe of the power between them, tugging at their hearts like the undercurrents of the ocean.

Maisey Ryder – Agent of…

Cigarette smoke hung low in the airless room, weaving its way over the men’s heads, seeming to settle on their shoulders.

The men’s eyes were all drawn to the small stage where a lone woman danced in a slow sultry style, her smile begging them to watch as she twisted her body around the pole in the most imaginative of poses.

“Bloody hell, where did you get her from,” Verone mumbled his cigarette dangling from his lips.

“You like the new girl then,” he said with a quiet rumble of laughter.

“Hell yeah, she’s gorgeous.”

A sudden explosion of noise behind them had the door bursting open, slamming back in to the wall. The girl on the stage screamed, grabbing her clothes she ran quickly off the stage.

“What the?” said Verone turning towards the door.

A fist landed in his face knocking him out of his chair, he landed on his backside tipping up the table and drinks on the way down.

Chairs scraped back, men stood glaring at the shadowy figure bending over their compatriot on the floor.

“What the hell,” said Verone rubbing his bruised jaw; he looked the figure up and down noticing the black boots and long black jacket curving around a long lithe body.  His eyes keep moving upwards until he hit the shadowed face.  “Who the hell are you and what do you want?”

“You know who I am Verone,” said a vicious voice.

The men began to circle the shadowy figure, slowly closing in; none noticed the smirk crossing the strangers face.

“I wouldn’t if I were you.”

“How the…” he said standing back up he finally caught a look at her face, “you’re supposed to be dead,” he scowled.

“No such luck for you.”

“What do you want?”

“Justice!” she replied glaring at him.

“I ain’t going anywhere with you, bitch,” he snarled.

The men’s attention taken; all eyes were on Verone. The woman let out a belly laugh and slowly one by one she knocked the men out, unconscious, broken or sore until only Verone was left standing.

“You coming, or do I have to take you down too?”

Sighing Verone picked up his hat scowling at his so called idiot friends groaning from the floor.

“Fine, but you won’t get away with this Maisey,” he snarled.

“Yeah I will,” she laughed grabbing his wrists and cuffing him, “I always do.”

*****

Maisey Ryder was one hell of a woman, tough from birth; when she’d fought hard for her life. Now as an adult she still fought and demanded respect from all who worked beside her.  Not that she worked with people very often, she didn’t really get on with others.  There again she didn’t work very often either.

She was a wanderer, never seeming to be able to settle anywhere for long. She travelled and saw the world.  Her bread and butter, the occasional bad guy who she’d haul in to local police departments in towns she wandered through.

Tall, with dark curly hair, her small slim waist gave her a curvy figure which many had to have a second glance at.  Maisey enjoyed life as much as she knew how. The admiring glances made her smirk, though some she found enjoyable.
